Memoirs of a Geisha

This weekend was somewhat of a rush around the city for me but I had a really good time. I am big movie goer so this weekend there was just too many things to choose from for a change. Usually the movies that are released should go directly to DVD. Memoirs of a Geisha was not one of these movies it was powerful, romantic and cinematically beautiful. Yeah I said romantic. I am not going to tell in details the story because I want you guys to go out and see it. The basic a young Japanese girl is sold at 8 years old, looses her parents soon after, her sister is taken away from her all within a very short time. You expect someone who had so much lost to be broken but her spirit was strong. The theme of suffering for love is brilliantly portrayed. I almost cried at one point. No matter how many time you hear a story about true love its always fresh and new.

You know when a movie is good when you leave the theater in character. For the next few hours I wanted be addressed as Hatsumomo.

DId anyone see it or what do you think i should see next?

I'll be seeing geisha this week. I agree, good movies stick with you after you see them, sometimes for a long time depending on how good... I'm Neo by the way.

So the movie was good huh? One of my friends was supposed to go see it, but I am not sure if she did or not. It seems interesting.

A lot of people have been talking about The Chronicles of Narnia. I heard that it was very good.

Today the Geisha life is a very different one, girls become Geisha by their own free will, and often only stay long enough to get married, much as any other profession in Japan. The Geisha population is slowly dying out and many of the Hanamachi have disappeared in recent times. There are talks of regulating the Geisha world, however whether this will ever occur is uncertain. The stigma of advertising for girls to join the profession has meant that the numbers do not grow, and there is a social understanding that while it may be very elegant to visit a Geisha it is not likely that one would wish their own daughter to become one. Perhaps the Geisha will become another packaged tourist attraction but more likely, as the Tayu became the Geisha, the Geisha will evolve into something more fitting to contemporary Japan.

I loved the last three lines of this film. Very powerful. Go see The Family Stone with Sarah Jessica Parker---it truly is wonderful!
